CIEMAT (Centro de Investigaciones Energéticas, Medioambientales y Tecnológicas) is a public research body assigned to the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, focusing on energy and environment and the technologies related to them. Its activity is structured around projects which form a bridge between R&D&I and social interest goals. The R&D&I activity is framed in national and international settings, and is complemented by activities such as education, technology transfer, rendering technical services, advising to the administrations and representation of Spain in a diversity of international forums. Involved in the project is the Group of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) within the Department of Environment, which is performing different investigations based on: (i) presence and transfer of POPs and organic emerging pollutants (EPs) in different environmental compartments, (II) monitoring of POPs and EPs in different matrices, (ii) National POP Inventory related to energetic and industrial processes and (iii) development and optimization of systems for the detection and analysis of POPs and EPs including the steps of extraction, purification and instrumental analysis.

Role in the project

CIEMAT will be involved in WP2 and WP4 (task 2.3 – Data collection and analysis in the CSS following an integrated diagnostic approach and task 4.1 - Assessment of the effects on PPPs´ mixtures on ecosystem health). CIEMAT will perform chemical analysis of PPP residues in different matrices and will participate in the transfer and bioavailability/bioaccumulation studies.

Involved personnel

Silhouet Dr. Martínez is Head of the Group of Persistent Organic Pollutants, chemist. Around 30 years of experience in the study of POPs and EPs in the environment. 
Silhouet Dr. De la Torre is Researcher, chemist. Expert in POPs and EPs (specially halogenated compounds), by including investigations on transfer, bioaccumulation and risk assessment. Responsible for the laboratory of HRGC-LRMS.
Silhouet Dr Navarro is Researcher and biochemist. Expert in the study and characterisation of POPs, especially chlorinated pesticides and EPs (perfluoroalkyl substances) in the environment. Responsible for the laboratory of HPLC-MS/MS.
Silhouet Dr. Nuñez is in charge of the European Projects Office of CIEMAT. Her team is giving support to CIEMAT’s researchers in order to find the best international programs for funding their research and innovation activities. She is collaborating with Dr. María de los Ángeles Martínez in her international R&I activities and projects.
